With it’s never-ending plague of tourists, Soho has always been a ‘no go’ for a fun night out. However, with top secret and hip cocktail bars and eateries such as BYOC and La Bodegra Negra offering a hideaway from jabbering theatre go-ers Soho is once again a pretty darn cool place to go.

My new fave for food? Flesh and Buns on Earlham Street.

Grub – 9/10

The speciality is quite literally what it says on the tin. Flesh (I recommend the piglet belly or duck breast) and Japanese soft buns. It’s messy, but god does it taste good! For desert opt for the open fire with green tea chocoate, marshmallows and biscuits.

Booze – 10/10

Good price. Got tipsy. What else can you ask for?

Dolla’ – 7/10

For 3 (small) courses and (plenty) alcohol it was around £40 p.p. Not bad for central.

Perv Factor – 4.5/10

There was a slightly less than dashing overweight asian man opposite eating Korean wings with his hands. The meat juice seeping down his arms really added to his aesthetic.

 Banter – 9/10

No-one seems to be in a rush and is definitely there to ‘make a night of it’. If you spot someone over 40 there, I’ll give you a tenner.

Bathrooms are complete with Japanese pornographic cartoons which gives you a giggle.

The secret to looking like Cara…

…from A-List stylist to the stars and the Victoria Secret Angels, Teddy Charles!

British Vogue cover, January 2014

If you haven’t heard of Cara Delevingne you’re from another Universe, let alone another planet. The internationally renowned model is known just as much for her ability to party as her ability to work a Burberry Prorsum runway and is never out of the press whether it be in a DKNY advertisement or pictures of her watching basketball with Rihanna. The IT-girl is simply unstoppable at the moment with a bubbling acting career through the likes of up-coming movie, The Face of an Angel and Karl Lagerfeld’s Fendi film and she has also just had her second British Vogue cover shoot within ten months.

One thing that shines on the January 2014 cover, is her amazing beach waves. Despite looking relaxed and effortless, this is often the hardest hair trend to achieve. Curls either fall flat, look too poodle-esque, or too much salt spray results in a matted birds nest!

I spoke with Teddy Charles, the stylist behind many supermodels such as Gisele, Karlie Kloss, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Jourdan Dunn and of course Cara, about how to get perfect Delevingne waves. Teddy has worked with Cara on numerous projects including the DKNY campaigns and says: “Cara is really fun – she makes everyone laugh on shoot! Her hair is in great condition too.” Want to know a HUGE secret? “I always put extensions in Cara’s hair when I style it”, says Teddy. Ah-ha! Finally the explanation to her lengthy locks. But, what about those gorgeous loose waves? Read on…

A-List stylist, Teddy Charles

A-List stylist, Teddy Charles

How to get Cara’s waves [Warning: may lead to intense strutting]:

Step 1: Wash hair with shampoo and use a tiny bit of conditioner at the tips. If hair is too moisturised it will fall flat. Rinse hair with cold water for extra shine!

Step 2: Blast hair upside down until almost dry. Then, use a medium round bristle brush to create height and volume. Scrunch hair whilst drying to achieve gorgeous Cara-like waves!

Step 3: Spray dry shampoo at the roots for body and spritz the lengths of your hair with a little salt water for bouncing model-like tresses…

You’re welcome ladies!

Sheer Brilliance

Cheeky chic skirts are the next big thing.

Is it that time of year already? Just as we’ve folded our bikinis back in our drawers, the dust is being shaken off our faux fur. Thereafter, like a big slap in the sun kissed face next season’s collections cascade down the runway to remind us that we are now in the chilly season. Damn.

We have a wee while to wait, and to be fair great winter trends such as punk and dark florals to covet, but it doesn’t hurt to dream about next season.

The biggest SS14 trend has to be sheer skirts. Not for the faint-hearted, these jupes designed by the likes of Burberry Prorsum, Gucci, Fendi, Mulberry and Sass & Bide (just to name a few) don’t leave much to the imagination. Nevertheless, they give your legs a soft covering like a complimentary instagram filter! LOVE.

A Scottish Staycation

Who needs Barbados and Berlin when you can have Britain?

1239628_10153176228830389_1451824469_n

Are you sitting comfortably? Then let our geography test begin.

  1. What is the capital of Italy?
  2. Which city is more Northern, New York or Miami?

Too easy?

How about what city is more southern Chester, or Liverpool?

If you got it, well done, you know the UK better than I do.

We are in the age of travel. As soon as kids reach the end of their school days they run for Peru or make to Thailand. Do they go to the remote outer Hebrides or explore Exeter? Hell no.

I was recently chatting with someone from Thailand about how beautiful Scotland is. It turned out they knew more about my homeland than I do. To risk further embarrassment, I convinced my parents to take me for a relaxing and educational staycation up north. So, after a fun-filled, alcohol fuelled week in Marbella with my friends (safe to say, uneducational), I made my way up the The Crinan Hotel nestled beside the Sound of Jura and Crinan canal.

If a bit of serenity is what you’re after, the Argyll and Bute area in which Crinan resides in is perfect. The Sound of Jura may translate to ‘Sound of Disappointment’ but time spent here will be far from that. Being a Londoner, I’ve gotten used to the hustle and bustle so it was a real change to witness silence, tumbling mountains, crystal clear lochs and of course lack of WiFi…

The Crinan Hotel (loved by the likes of Princess Anne) is owned by an art loving couple and boasts an art gallery and bar on its top floor complete with breathtaking views. There’s also a piano there which has been played by many famous guests such as Andrew Lloyd Webber. The hotel has two restaurants which specialise in seafood and it’s safe to say I put on a good few pounds the days I spent here. The decor is by no means modern but homely and comfortable with sofas you literally sink into. The Crinan canal was handmade hundreds of years ago as a travel alternative to the dangerous Mull of Kintyre. It’s crazy to think men did that with their bare hands.

A car is a necessity if you want to explore nearby attractions such as Inverarray Castle, the Lock Fyne restaurant, Isle of Seil and Easdale and Glencoe – the haunting location of the Campbell’s massacre of the MacDonald clan.

Read on for some snaps of my trip and the best places to spend a Scottish staycation!

Clueless Clobber

The London Lassie gets ready to embrace nineties Beverly Hills ‘Betty’ and ‘Baldwin’ness…

clueless_fuera_de_onda_1995_8-1024x576

The new season collections are in and this season it’s super easy to match up and choose key pieces. “As if!” you say? Lets just say everyone is going to be Clueless – but in a good way!

Most twenty-something girls fondly remember the movie Clueless from E number fuelled, boy bantering, truth and dare playing sleepovers which led us to constantly mouth ‘Whatever!’ and ‘As if!’. However, watch this film now and discover its hidden jokes we didn’t get aged 10 and its fashions BANG ON with the autumn 2013 collections. When in style doubt, this year, think Cher, Dionne and Tai to channel some nostalgic chic.

Read below for some hilarious Clueless quotes. How many can you remember?

Cher’s Dad: Cher what the hell is that?
Cher: A dress.
Cher’s Dad: Says who?
Cher: Calvin Klein!

Murray: Your man Christian is a cake boy!
Cher and Dionne: (together) A what?
Murray: He’s a disco-dancing, Oscar Wilde-reading, Streisand ticket-holding friend of Dorothy, know what I’m saying?

Amber: Was I the only one listening? I thought it reeked.
Cher: No, I believe that’s your designer imposter perfume.

Christian: Do you like Billie Holiday?
Cher: I love him.

Cher: If it’s a concussion, you have to keep her conscious, okay? Ask her questions.
Elton: What’s seven times seven?
Cher: Stuff she knows!

Cher: Where’s my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal. It’s my most capable looking outfit!

Cher’s Dad: Where are you?
Cher: I’m just having a snack at my girlfriend’s.
Cher’s Dad: Where, in Kuwait?
Cher: Is that in the valley?

Cher: Isn’t my house classic? The columns date all the way back to 1972.

Cher: I want to do something for humanity.
Josh: How about sterilization?

Cher: Do you prefer fashion victim or ensembly challenged?

Cher: He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?

Josh: (watching news about the Bosnian conflict) You look confused.
Cher: Well, uh, I thought they declared peace in the Middle East.

Heather: It’s just like Hamlet said, “To thine own self be true.”
Cher: Hamlet didn’t say that.
Heather: I think I remember Hamlet accurately.
Cher: Well, I remember Mel Gibson accurately, and he didn’t say that. That Polonius guy did.

Tai: Do you think she’s pretty?
Cher: No, she’s a full-on Monet.
Tai: What’s a monet?
Cher: It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s OK, but up close, it’s a big old mess.

Cher: (in regards to losing her virginity) You see how picky I am about my shoes and they only go on my feet.

Cher: I was surfing the crimson wave. I had to haul ass to the ladies’.

Mel: Do you know what time it is?
Cher: A watch doesn’t really go with this outfit, daddy.

Mel: You mean to tell me that you argued your way from a C+ to an A-?
Cher: Totally based on my powers of persuasion, you proud?
Mel: Honey, I couldn’t be happier than if they were based on real grades.

Mel: You drink?
Christian: No, thanks. I’m cool.
Mel: I’m not offering. I’m asking you if you drink. You think I offer alcohol to teenage drivers taking my daughter out?
Christian: Hey man, the protective vibe. I dig.

Tai: Why should I listen to you, anyway? You’re a virgin who can’t drive.

Amber: Ms. Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn’t want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose.
Dionne: Well, there goes your social life.

Tai: I could really use some sort of herbal refreshment.
Dionne: Oh, well we do lunch in ten minutes. We don’t have any tea, but we have Coke and stuff.
Tai: No shit. You guys got Coke here?
Dionne: Well, yeah.
Cher: Yeah, this is America.

Cher: Daddy, did you ever have a problem you couldn’t argue your way out of?
Dad: Tell me the problem and we’ll figure out how to argue out of it.

Cher: So like, right now for example. The Haitians need to come to America. But some people are all, “What about the strain on our resources?” Well it’s like when I had this garden party for my father’s birthday, right? I put R.S.V.P. ’cause it was a sit-down dinner. But some people came that like did not R.S.V.P. I was like totally buggin’. I had to haul ass to the kitchen, redistribute the food, and squish in extra place settings. But by the end of the day it was, like, the more the merrier. And so if the government could just get to the kitchen, rearrange some things, we could certainly party with the Haitians. And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty. Thank you very much.

Cher: would you call me selfish?
Dionne: no, not to your face.

Round the twist

The London Lassie gets ready to embrace twirled tresses…

Caught in a summer shower last weekend my straight, sleek hair was devilishly transformed into a mop of frizz. Nevertheless, despite thinking I looked like a novelty dish washing brush, I got loads of compliments (and a few free drinks).

Summer was all about sleek locks and the slicked back look, but with more rain to come our way this autumn it seems designers have prepared us for this twist of fate as kinky manes are set to cause a storm!

One of the best hair looks from the AW13 catwalks has to be that of the Just Cavalli show. Roberto Cavalli coveted deep, defined crimps and waves. To get this look, plait damp hair and leave to dry. Then unravel twisted tresses. Easy!

Burger and Lobster

This 18 month old finger-licking joint shows no sign of hitting the terrible twos…

Capture

Thank god Rod Stewart got sick. Sorry Rod, but it’s true. The ‘rents were down from bonnie Scotland to see the croaky crooner last Thursday. When he cancelled due to a ‘bronchial virus’ we decided to hit the Mayfair branch of Burger and Lobster. And although this unique restaurant is probably a decade old in hipster years, it shows no sign of stopping. The queue is still around the block, the atmosphere is buzzing, and the food (burger or lobster, the only choices) is phenomenal. Read on for the London Lassie‘s ratings.

Grub – 9.5/10

The one and a half pound lobster is char-grilled to perfection and the garlic butter that accompanies it is sublime! The tail is served ready to dig in, but for added fun value, the claws are left to crack open yourself! The fries are deliciously crisp and the dressed side salad a nice touch. The burger is also yummy (we got one to share, might as well try the whole menu eh?) with a generous covering of melted cheddar. They lose half a point for the near rippage of my dress…

Booze – 7/10

Whilst eagerly awaiting my table I sunk a cool, crisp Prosecco. With dinner we shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio which my folks loved, but I didn’t appreciate the vanilla after taste (can’t remember the name, sorry). The cocktail list is great and what this place lacks in food choices, it certainly makes up for in drink choices. Nevertheless, they’re not the cheapest…

Dolla’ – 7/10

Although everything on the munchtastic menu is £20 – a bloody bargain for a whole lobster – the drinks aren’t as good value. Don’t let the food fool you, you may end up spending double on drinks (which is what we did).

Perv Factor – 4.5/10

Burger and Lobster branches in cooler venues such as Soho may have a hotter clientèle. The Mayfair eatery mainly consists of married businessmen, camp Bond Street boutique workers and Chinese tourists. Nevertheless, a few bonny faces. They get half a point because my b-e-a-utiful mummy was there!

Banter – 9/10

The place goes like a fair and the bar is teaming with punters awaiting a table. Because of the ever growing queue outside, you get the  feeling you’ve sneaked into a really hip party. The waiters are also extremely friendly despite being under an expected amount of stress. However, the main chunk of points in the banter scale has to be for the fact that after requesting to check out the 11lb lobster (£165 if you want this…) the head chef (Ken, or Kev?) escorted us into the kitchen to shows us the gigantic sea creature and then proceeded to take us downstairs to show us the huge lobster tank! They sell almost 1,000 a day, you can imagine the size!

Would I return? Absolutely. Go eat.

Dr. Francesca Fusco

The London Lassie has a wee blether with leading dermatologist and Sunsilk hair expert, Dr. Francesca Fusco, in New York on how to achieve thick healthy locks!

Francesca_Lifestyle_034

LL:

After year’s of wearing extensions my hair feels thin, and has the tendency to fall out. How can I prevent this?

FF:

If they’re long hairs with a little white bulb at the end that’s okay.

*she grabs a hair*

Do you see that little white bulb on the tip? If you’re seeing that little white bulb that’s okay to have hairs coming out. That means it was ready to fall out and there is a new hair behind it. But if you are losing a lot, like more than a hundred hairs a day that could indicate that there is a nutritional issue going on or a stress issue or a change in hormones. Probably one of the most frequent causes of hair loss is when women are going through stress; we aren’t getting the right dietary components in our body.

Are you a vegetarian or a vegan?

LL:

No.

Dr Fusco:

Ok, and do you get red meat and vegetables in your diet?

LL:

A lot of vegetables, I eat red meat around once a week.

Dr Fusco:

Ok, well one thing you could consider doing is taking a vitamin every day. There are a number of vitamins that you can buy in your local drug store that can help your skin and hair, and they contain a good amount of iron and things you may not be getting in your food.

And just remember there is always a 2-4 month lag between doing the right thing and then noticing it reflected in your hair. So you will have to be doing it for about 2-3 months before you see any results.

LL:

I see.

Dr Fusco:

So that’s for the sheddy part of it.

In terms of them snipping the ends of the hairs…May I look at your hair to see?

LL:

Sure.

Dr Fusco:

Normally everyday you blow dry your hair?

LL:

No, every few days but I always straighten it, which is very bad right if I do it everyday?

Dr. Fusco:

If you do it properly…It’s okay!

(Looking at the tips of the hair)

When was the last time you had your hair trimmed?

LL:

Dr Fusco:

Ok, it’s good! A bit dry, do you colour your hair too?

LL:

Yeah, but semi-permanent and haven’t done it in a while.

Dr Fusco:

I can see the colour on your hair!

*she continues looking*

So now what I am going to do is look mid-shaft to try find a bubble hair…

It’s not bad but a bubble hair comes from heat, the hair is almost woven like under a microscope and you see a little white bubble in the middle.

LL:

Oh my god! That sounds awful!

Dr Fusco:

Yeah, its called bubble hair and bubble hair means that you have to be more careful with the heating products that you’re using because that strand is more likely to break. And you don’t want it to break right in the middle.

*she finds a few!*

One thing you can do to prevent that is nourish your hair every day just like you would nourish your face.

You know when you wake up and your face is really dry and flaky? You can fix it by moisturising it and the same thing for your hair. So, you treat your hair to a hair mask once a week or whenever you can, pay a lot of attention to the tips.

A lot of women forget to put the conditioner and products on their scalp, afraid it is going to weigh down the hair and make it greasy but it won’t.

So, remember to really massage it thoroughly into the scalp and comb it through the hair and try to give your hair a holiday at least one day a week from the heat…if you can, if you can!

LL:

Wow I never thought of putting conditioner on my scalp!

FF:

Trust me, your scalp needs it!

LL:

I’ll be trying it!

Your hair is so full and bouncy *it really is*. How do you recommend women get volume like yours?

Dr Fusco:

So, part of that comes from the styling and when you speak to the stylist they will tell you how to use the right brush and also using the right product will make a big difference. You can talk to your stylist to help you choose the best product for your hair and achieving the volume.

I am sure you know the trick of when you go to bed at night wearing your hair up in a scrunchie, do you know that trick?

LL:

No… *I haven’t owned a scrunchie since 1996, but according to Ashish they’re making a comeback!*

FF:

Okay, so you want to wake up the next morning with volume… You put your hair in a ponytail on top, in a loose scrunchie and when you wake up in the morning and you take the hair down it’s perfect! That’s the trick. Use a scrunchie because they don’t damage the hair.

LL:

Great tip! And so easy! *note to self: buy scrunchie*

Dr Fusco:

Yeah, I know right!

Another thing is using dry shampoo. So what you do is lift the hair up  and you spray a little of the dry shampoo underneath and then when you let go it looks a little bit more volumised.

Good?

LL:

Yeah good!

Dr Fusco:

Any other questions you have?

LL:

Do you think there is an increase in hair fall for young women in recent years?

FF:

I have to say over the last five years I have been sitting in my office and all the young girls have hair fall due to the damage. So for me the message getting out to them is, take it easy with the heating products and extensions and if you can give your hair a holiday once a week. A Saturday or Sunday don’t use the heating products and condition, condition, condition.

Feed your hair from the roots, from the scalp.

LL:

Thanks Francesca!
